Paying respect to the source, where knowledge and wisdom was shared from, is very important in the Hawaiian tradition. These traditions were historically only passed down for generations within families.
As the beauty and the healing energy of the islands became a place of refuge for folks far and wide, these kupunas (elders) taught their traditions - no matter what color or religion - in their beachhouses <<ohana-style>>.
It's my honor and desire to share what I have learned in an authentic way to help perpetuate the wisdom and lineage of this healing work.
I learned the practice of the Hawaiian healing traditions
through my teacher, Kapua.
My journey started with learning the art of Lomi Lomi at the Aloha School of Massage Therapy in 2005. Kapua taught the teachings from Aunty Margaret from the Big Island.
It was also through Kapua that I learned the benefits of Hot/Cold Therapy. We would participate in a ceremony that involves getting hot in steam caves made with hot lava rocks followed by jumping in the ocean. It was these rounds of getting hot and getting cold that would regulate and restore balance in the body and prepare us for work.
In today's modern world, we see these therapies still being celebrated at SPAS. The steam rooms and saunas are set next to cold plunges and cold dips to shock our systems to initiate and enable balance. This is known as hormesis and we explore more of the practice and benefits of hormesis during our RESET.
Did you know SPA stands for Salus Per Aquam - Latin for Healing or Health by means of Water?

This is also when I first came into contact with the practice of Ho'oponopono....the practice of "getting right" with the people in your circle.
This practice is simple yet profound. It's the practice of using a prayer that involves expressing remorse, asking for forgiveness, expressing gratitude and expressing love to heal and transform relationships.
This is the mantra that results in the energetic cleaning and healing of our subconscious minds.
The hooponopono is a family and community problem-solving process to restore harmony and bring people together!
It literally translates as “setting to right,” to restore and maintain good relationships among family, friends and supernatural powers.
The ho'oponopono may appear simple, but it undeniably resonates. It benefits from its highly structured framework, and its main pursuit: Forgiveness.
The takeaway here is there has always been a persisting awareness by Hawaiians of how one’s mind—negative thoughts, confusion, anger and hostility—is interrelated with one’s physical health and well-being.
When all issues have been discussed and aired out, the mihi, a sincere confession of wrongdoings is expressed. Forgiveness is sought. It’s expected in the hooponopono protocol that when someone asks for forgiveness they be granted it.
"Your hands reveal your heart. If your hands are gentle and loving, all will feel the sincerity of your heart and the healing energy will flow through you. Remember much of the healing is a praying work."
